NEW YORK -- 2nd Lt. Samy Cano, a Union, N.J., native, is commissioned a Marine Corps officer on USS Intrepid, here, Jan. 29. Cano, formerly a staff sergeant, previously served in the 9th Engineer Support Battalion at Marine Corps Base Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan. He earned his degree at State University of New York Maritime College through the Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Education Program. In 2009, 150 enlisted Marines were selected to the program designed to provide outstanding enlisted Marines the opportunity to serve as Marine Corps officers.
