NEW YORK -- Staff Sergeant Daniel Valdes, a Grass Valley, Calif., native, received the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal in a Times Square-ceremony, here, Dec. 7. Valdes, logistics chief, 6th Communications Battalion, Marine Forces Reserve, and his family will depart for California prior to Christmas and he will deploy to Afghanistan in the coming months. Valdes was awarded for his work from 2008 to 2011 within the community. He built a relationship between the battalion and the Ronald McDonald House, serving families of children who are hospitalized, by organizing three separate events featuring a spaghetti meal for the families, gift baskets, toy giveaways, and entertainment.
